The project includes, but is not limited to, mobilizing, removing, loading, transporting, and disposing sludge and invasive aquatic mussels from the Southwest, Northeast and Springwells Water Treatment Plants on an as-needed basis. The sludge and invasive aquatic mussels to be removed are located in the sedimentation basins, flocculator chambers and associated channels, which are enclosed concrete structures, approximately 25-feet deep below-grade that are OSHA permit-required confined spaces. The sludge is the by-product of the water treatment coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation drinking water treatment processes. The primary coagulant used is aluminum sulfate (alum) and polymer is occasionally added as a settling aid. The invasive aquatic mussels include zebra and quagga mussels. The raw sludge removed from the sedimentation basins, flocculation chambers and associated channels will require dewatering into a sludge cake to render the material suitable for transporting and disposing at a licensed solid waste landfill. The sites where the sludge removal and disposal work will be performed are located at:  a) Northeast Water Treatment Plant, 11000 East Eight Mile Road, Detroit, Michigan. b) Springwells Water Treatment Plant, 8300 West Warren Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan.  c) Southwest Water Treatment Plant, 14700 Moran Road, Allen Park, Michigan.
